Quick Help

Email Archiving (Windows Only)

We recommend archiving all email over 3 years old. State regulations require that 3 years worth of Sent mail be saved if it pertains to university business. Finance employees should save 5 years of sent mail.

Using the University Instant Messaging Server

We will be turning off the College's IM Server on January 1, 2010.

Using the University VPN (Virtual Private Network)

We will be turning off the College's VPN Server on January 1, 2010. A VPN is required when you are not at Virginia Tech and need to connect to the file server (departmental and personal shares), or download software from http://network.software.vt.edu. It is also helpful when using library resources. Not many of our users use the VPN. You need to have your wireless access activated to use the VPN. If you need VPN access and do not have a VT wireless account activated, please submit a help ticket to get your wireless activated. This is a procedural step that is actually unrelated to whether or not you need or want to use the wireless network.

Connecting to Exchange (Mail and Calendaring)

When connecting to Exchange from outside Virginia Tech (and not using Weboutlook) you may need to a VPN connection first. This depends on your Internet Service Provider's policies.

Connecting Mobile Devices to Exchange

You may request help to configure your phone from the IT team only if your phone is purchased and provided by Virginia Tech.
